As was said in the foeward ,this is a English book .It is of the highest quality in the wording and the sentances and in the speed of the book . I had a house master, I had a head master and I went to chapel every morning and although I went shortly after WW2 , every thing seemed much the same as in this book ,centered aroung WW 1 .We have forgotten how to speak politely now ,this book shows how it was done. A reread every year for me.Product details

prime version is supposedly "made in the USA" by something called the "Acra Foundation". It looks like it was compiled by someone who doesn't even understand standard Western book format no chapter headings or numbers, no paragraph indentation and chapters apparently beginning on the bottom back-side of a page. Disconcerting. An insult to the copyright holder. Dated four days before I received it. Just for me. They really shouldn't have.
Excellent movie/story and cast depicting pre WW I life and thereafter in small town England. Mr. Chips loses his wife and remains single thereafter but the boys in his school truly become his family. He dies happy and so are we! Robert and Greer do a magnificent job. Not today's sophistication (sex and violence) in a movie but a timely period piece you will enjoy.
A brief but immeasurable treasure. I read this small work long after seeing the classic film. For all who love learning, and loved the great teachers of their youth, this is a must read. To give one's life to education is a noble and pure sacrifice.
This short novel captures the long career of a schoolmaster at a boys prep school in England called Brookfield so exquisitely and impressionistically that you’ll be left feeling as though these are your memories, as though these characters are people you encountered in your past. James Hilton captures both the character of Mr. Chipping and the atmosphere of Brookfield through careful descriptions of short episodes and anecdotes ranging from a conflict between the headmaster, Ralston, who seeks to undermine the “old gentlemanly traditions” and Chipping to poignant scenes from the beginning and ending of the first World War. While it does flirt at times with sentimentality, ‘Good-bye, Mr. Chips’ mostly maintains the quiet reserve of its subject as it looks back nostalgically over a lengthy career teaching Classics to young students.
A warm and endearing novel set in a private boys school in England in the 18 and 1900s. Mr. Chips, aging and now retired from many decades of teaching, remembers with fond nostalgia the overview of his well-loved life. People at the
school love and respect him, remembering his odd sense of humor and his open kindness toward all his boys. Characters are well drawn and the tenor of the novel is comfortable. A wonderful trip through a man's life.
I started the book not knowing what was about. Only to discover that it was about a mans life as a teacher and how through he life he touched many of young men and how all of his student became his family lovely book very quick read you will enjoy this book
This was a book that no one should miss. I have a huge soft spot for James Hilton, and there is something so soft and beautiful about this story - the sad and the sweet that make up human stories.
But let the book speak for itself "Yes, he still had ’em—those ideas of dignity and generosity that were becoming increasingly rare in a frantic world."
It's a short read, but one that will leave an impression.
