OK, so first, spoiler alert - I hate, Hate, HATE threesomes/ménages/throuples, whatever you call them, and this story was about 1/3 taken with the adventures of the threesome - the first few sex scenes with the MC's involved another man. Ugh. The story also lost believability on many points - 15 years of constantly being together and one didn't know the other was gay - really? 15 years and one didn't know the other was ever involved in rodeo - really? 15 years and one didn't know the other lost a sister to addiction - really? 15 years of one loving the other and suspecting the other was in the closet but never, not once, took the chance to tell him he loved him - really? And then the big reveal of another family member at the end - supposed to give us hope for future gay cowboys? Just too unbelievable. The blurb indicates the story will be mainly about the two men staying in the cabin for one to detox - they only spend about 3 days there... First book was better, this one is definitely on the "probably will delete from my Kindle" list.Product details

My Heartache Cowboy by Z. A. Maxfield – 4 STARS
(Be forewarned that this is /M/M/M romance with graphic sex scenes)
I follow book bloggers because I often find books I never would have considered reading this way. That’s how I stumbled across My Heartache Cowboy.
A review on the Seductive Musings blog really intrigued me so I went and downloaded the sample from . Well, what do you know, by the time I’d finished the sample I had to buy the book and finish it. Isn’t that a sign of a good story – you have to buy the rest of the book once you’ve started it.
Obviously, I’m not really interested in M/M/ or M/M/M sex (although I learned a few things), but the central relationship was wonderful, powerful, and real.
The two main characters are cowboys, working cowboys not rich; they don’t own the ranch they work on etc. Eddie and Jimmy aren’t hot young things either. They are 42 and 38 and have known each other for years. They are best friends first and foremost, and soon become much more.
Jimmy is an alcoholic and his friend Eddie is determined to help him go AA. Enter their surgeon friend Don. I found him the weak link. He’s 52, been sober for over ten years and is there to help. I didn’t warm to him at all. I thought he was a user. He has a wife and kids but is gay and they all live separate lives. He is the one who makes Jimmy face both his alcoholism and that he’s a closet gay. The men start a threesome, I was going to say relationship, but it’s not. It’s simply sex. Don also tries to get Jimmy to face what he feels for Eddie, but something that happened in Jimmy's childhood, and the death of his brother, who he feels responsible for, makes him hide his true self and feelings.
I think I would have loved the book even more if Don weren’t in it. However, he is the catalyst for making Jimmy face his demons. I think it would have made the book stronger, if that role went to Eddie.
I think Z. A. Maxfield did a superb job with these characters. I loved them. I loved how they spoke to each other, how they thought about life and how their relationship unfolded and they faced their demons from their past.

I think this was the first MMM story I ever read. This is Eddie and Jimmy's story, after Eddie drives away with a drunken Jimmy for a forced dry-out, before Jimmy loses his job. Eddie has been in a friends with benefits relationship with Don for years. Don is a doctor, with a serious cowboy fetish, and he helps Eddie, and eventually Jimmy, through the process. Part of the process becomes some intimate and very, very hot time in the hot tub and elsewhere.
The story is in Jimmy's POV and it chronicles his journey to facing his past, his demons and the hard truths of his life. It's often gut-wrenching, irritating, eye-rolling but it's ultimately affirmative. It's probably the strangest journey to sobriety I've ever read! I loved it every time I've read it. Z.A. has the ability to write characters that are so easy to empathize with. They're lives are angst-filled and messy, often tragic but never crossing the line into unbelievable. The redemption is never neat and easy either. And it's Cowboys, real hard-working cowboys, who are also intelligent and insightful. They'll stay on my all-time favorites shelf forever.
